I mean PEN.

Oh my god. That was probably the worst joke I've ever come up with. I feel like poop, you guys. I think I caught a cold yesterday because I was so lazy I couldn't get myself to stand up and put on pants. Pathetic. Anyways PEN started out kinda bad and I still think it was a watered up version of last year. The place was bigger, which is supposed to be a good thing but it was like you put too much water into your lemonade. Or just like festival beer, come to think of it. But the last day was pretty damn good, thanks to the ever wonderful Dj Enikő, who filled the biggest tent with her simple ability to put on good music. In the end she had to be dragged off the stage at 4am sharp, because the lame organizers never learn their lesson. You can't finish last night at 4am. LAME. I admit I haven't been to too many concerts. I think I saw Žagar, Uno Y Medio and Quimby to be quite precise, bwhahaha. I had been to better concerts of either band but it was alright since I didn't pay for the ticket. It turned out that some of the sponsored tickets used at the festival were leftovers from last year and since I'm a fanatic and I collect and keep all of my past festival tickets I just slipped on last year's and recycled it. I am made of win as kids say these days.

So last week I've been to PEN but when I wasn't there I was watching my birthday present at home. My birthday is on the 17th of May but I found the perfect presents for myself last week on Vatera, an auction site and I just had to buy them sooner and what bargains they were. I bought two seasons (3rd, 4th) of Six Feet Under for 8000 Forints. The box of the 3rd season is in pretty bad shape even though it's supposed to be in an unopened condition but I can't complain since it was half the price. I don't think this will be any news for you but I, of course, watched the two seasons by the end of the weekend and I started on Thursday and fit a festival into the week too. Ha. I have to reestablish and stress the fact that it's still the best TV show ever, with quotes like "Nate. The whole world is a cemetery." and
-Come on, at least you're alive! What's a little pain to you?
-Life can't be this simple.
-Why not?

Meh. Last two weeks of school. Do. Not. Want. I have to remember not to use up my 2 possible missed classes next semester because I will need them in the last two weeks. I still have to write like 2-4 papers and have to get hold of the movie "Rejtély" by Haneke. I've seen it a few months ago but that's no foundation to build a paper on. I took a few photos at PEN and I'm going to share them with you along the photos of my lovely presents. I also changed my super-emo artsy profile picture to one taken on the last dawn of PEN, it captures my new haircut just right! This is probably my last post but there was so much I was going to write about and didn't. It makes me sad.

Okay. Not THAT sad apparently because last Tuesday it was announced that
NINE INCH NAILS PLAYS BUDAPEST THIS SUMMER. YAY.
*insert insufferable flailing*

Cheers, You Guys!

Six Feet Under

The Žagar Phenomena

Sexiest Conga Player/Rapper Alive
(Varga Livius)

I actually snapped this photo right at the moment when a professional photographer flashed. I wanted to explain that since then. So the main idea is that not having a life is not necessarily bad in a sense. When I say I don't have a life, it means that I'm so passionate about something that it takes up all my free time and most of my non-free time too. So it doesn't mean anything emo-related depressive teenage angst, just that for example I love House so I could watch it all day long abandoning the rest of the world because it gives me joy. I don't see what's wrong with that.

I had to realise two things today: spring break is over and I won't see Nine Inch Nails probably for years or ever again live. Both of them gives me grief. Fortunately this semester I'm organised enough to have my exam period kind of sort of planned out in advance and I'm quite happy with it if I may say so. I hope there's no glitch in my plan.

I also heard that Amazon is boycotting gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender literature and they are trying to make it look like it's a system breakdown. Pathetic. Basically they erased the sales ranks of these books, thus not including them in their top lists and decreasing their sales big time. If you'd like to sign a petition against Amazon and would like some further reading in the topic, go here.

I basically did nothing in spring break BUT I watched the third season of Dexter and I have to say, you guys, this is THE BEST available TV show right now IN THE WORLD. Yes, it's better than House. If House wouldn't be broadcast on a national TV channel, that would be the best but this way it's Dexter. Basically the whole mentality of a national TV show is so different from that of a more daring, independent TV channel's programme, like Dexter, because it is based on the exploitation of the audience. The producers of House want to chain you to your TV set, no matter what but the producers of Dexter want to make something lasting and valuable and that difference can be felt and makes the latter more enjoyable. But House is still the best of the mass productions.

Speaking of House, it's 1:22am and at 2am the live broadcast starts from New York so I have to tune in soon. It'll be fun to get up at 8.

I just remembered that I actually went to the World Press thing in Pécs and I really liked it but it's very cold in the Cella Septichora Center and the photos are pretty depressing to add to the chilly mood. So don't take your girlfriend if you don't want a sobfest.

I'm listening to my LastFm radio channel and my favourite song by NOHA just came on! I'm going to see them live this summer! I'm going to Fishing On Orfű, Balaton Sound (Moby), Hegyalja (NOHA+Basement Jaxx) and Sziget festivals and though my heart breaks every time at the thought of not seeing NIN live this summer, it's still gonna be awesome.

I made a decision of starting to collect my favourite TV shows on DVD so I took the first steps and asked for the first season of Six Feet Under for my birthday which is pretty near now and I won't be able to concentrate on anything else until the 17th of May! I really love that show! After collecting all of Six Feet Under, I'll move on to House and then Dexter. But that is years away. Maybe I won't even be alive by then. :D Nah, I will be.

What ho!

-Ah, I really should blog, shouldn't I, Jeeves?

-Indeed, sir.

What ho, people! There are so many things I'd just love to blog about, so many funny things that come to my mind on the bus, street etc. but when I get home after a long day of sitting in Szenes and downloading movies and TV shows, I can't be bothered to take a shower let alone write a blog. No actually I forget about them. :( I know I was thinking up something on the bus today but I don't know what it was.

Things that occupy my life at the moment:

I HATE papers. I just hate them. I mean the papers you have to write for classes. Why isn't it enough to read the relevant literature? I mean summarising a massive 20 pages long text about psychoanalytic film theories? BLEH. It is such a drag that I can't put it into words. Also even if you can somehow make a passable piece of work of it, you screw up the format. Like it's not Times New Roman, it's Verdana. Okay, it's Times New Roman but not size 12. Okay it's size 12 but you didn't use the double spaces between lines!!! Pffffffffffffffffffffff............................ Also, being me, I always postpone doing it until the last night before the paper is due, so if I have to write one it's guaranteed I'm missing a night's sleep. So bear that in mind teachers who plan to make me write papers. You make me miss out on sleep!

Anyways I finished my novel last Friday. It was one of the most ecstatic experiences of my life! My future husband is such a romantic! The funniest thing is that one of my best friends just got back from England with her own copy and was reading it while I was reading it and we finished it on the same day! We are so on the same wavelength. By the way she's in Budapest so she couldn't know where I was in the book. So this novel is about a very cool guy who is never without a cigarette all through the book, in fact it's a favourite pastime of his to just smoke for hours - an instant role model, and also who I can't not identify with my future husband. It's about a government conspiracy theory too, of which at first I thought it sucked big time because I was never interested in stuff like that before but there you go. It. Is. Amazing. (Mind you, everything is amazing that is done by my future husband but that's not important now.)

I'm reading The Picture of Dorian Gray now. It's a pretty harsh change after The Gun Seller. I couldn't get past the first chapter yet. I hope I get into it soon because after that it's easy and fun to pass time with a book but until my heart's not in it, I just feel dragged down by it. I actually needed a year and a RWS course to make myself read The Gun Seller and enjoy it, too.

Don't you just love ragtime? Well I do! I was listening to this silly little song today on the bus while the smelly guy got comfortable beside me (Here, I'm writing about the bus. I said I don't want to write about the bus but I thought I'd give it a chance. There you go. Smelly guy. That's what you get.) and despite the direness of the situation I couldn't wipe the head splitting grin off my face. Now that's what good music does to you.

"Back at Nagasaki where the fellows chew tobaccy and the women wacky wacky woo!"

Don't mind the performer. It's just my future husband. If you see me on the street or bus with a grin I'm unable to conceal, I'm listening to these or 10 other potential tracks. I'm also known to tap and sing along. I try not to sing on the bus but I just have to mouth the words!

I have to get up at 8. Nyah. Linguistics really is something I don't want to get up for at 8. There's a funny side to it, though. The teacher is a real linguist. When I say that, I mean that he applies to Stephen Fry's spot on interpretation of a linguist. I really am generous today. I'm showering you with entertainment goods. Here's something about Tricky Linguistics:

I hate to but may I, may I?

I'd also like to point out that in my opinion this video summarizes anything you ever need to know about linguistics in general. No matter how many linguistics courses you'll take, in the end the only thing you'll remember is that the possibilities that language offers are endless and there's no such thing as a 'longest sentence'. The rest is just being able to compare language to absurd things - in other words being able to think about it in abstract terms. There Timothy, you're a linguist now. Tell me if I'm wrong. Thought so.

If I had a bit more time maybe I'd do a paragraph about cooking with Gordon Ramsay. Another role model. Complaints were sent to the BBC because he said THE F WORD more than 300 times under 120 minutes in a TV special. What a man. Ah well, maybe next time!

Tomorrow it's downloading time of the 18th episode of season 5 of House. It's going to be about a woman who got her death predicted by a cat who only sleeps beside people who are going to die! I just lurve Tuesdays! ;)

Redecorating...

...is such a pain in the bum when one should be preparing for classes held within 24 hours, that also have the ability of destroying brain cells. The thing is, my mind is so fuzzy and hazy at the moment that I'm unable to do any REAL work and my originally short attention span only has eyes for the redecorating task.

But how could I be anything but 100% satisfied when the outcome is so beautiful?! Seriously... ahh! I'm sitting here, looking at my customized header and feel that every battle lost and won against html coding and pixel measures was worth the effort.

I don't mean to be an insufferable know-it-all but in case you're wondering who these peculiar (nickname for downright creepy) gentlemen are: it's a promo shot for a long lost television adaptation of P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves or Jeeves and Wooster stories, starring Stephen Fry as Jeeves, the valet and my future husband (ha ha), Hugh Laurie as Bertie Wooster. Currently I'm in the process of obtaining the full series (23 episodes) and I've already seen a beautiful box set on Vatera for 10000 forints but I wouldn't like to have to do anything with Hungarian bidding sites just yet.

Anyways I have a paper due at midnight so maybe it's time for me to look into the topic. How can days pass so quickly? It's horrible! I came home at 6, grabbed some "lunch", did the redecorating and it's 10 already and I have to get up at 8. Bleh.

Maybe I'll just stare at my header for a few more... hours. :D

First post : Oscars

Welcome to the first post of the year!

Since there's no better time than the last weekend before the big occasion, I decided to restart the blog with a post about the categories of the Academy Awards I find relevant. That's a bit ambivalent in itself because I don't really find the Oscars all that prestigious or anything and most of the time I don't agree with the choices of the Academy but it's still a nice thing if you have someone to cheer for and the results always make a good conversation topic. Though the point of the awards is that it only evaluates the artists' work by the single movie nominated, I can't do that since I haven't seen most of them, I can only judge by sympathy and filmography. So let's see the nominations.

Actor In A Leading Role

Richard Jenkins in "The Visitor"

Frank Langella in "Frost/Nixon"

Sean Penn in "Milk"

Brad Pitt in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"

Mickey Rourke in "The Wrestler"

Honestly I have no preference in this category. The one thing I know: I really don't want Brad Pitt to win. Even if I don't find the Oscars prestigious, other people may and I don't think he's got anything to do with prestige, haha. I have no idea who the Academy will choose. I heard Mickey Rourke was very good in The Wrestler. So...
Academy: Mickey Rourke
Me: Mickey Rourke

Actor In A Supporting Role

Josh Brolin in "Milk"

Robert Downey Jr. in "Tropic Thunder"

Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Doubt"

Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight"

Michael Shannon in "Revolutionary Road"

The media was high on Heath Ledger getting nominated everywhere but if someone saw The Dark Knight, well... I loved Heath, followed his career from the beginning and respected him very deeply, his passing was a horrible loss to me personally and to the world of cinema but I don't think this part of his career was so outstanding as others and I wouldn't like it if he just got awards because it was the last job he was able to finish. Obviously I want Bob Downey to win, hands down. Not only because I adore him - I adore Heath Ledger too - but because he was absolutely outstanding in Tropic Thunder. I'm surprised that the Academy actually considered that movie because it's so full of cheap - but nevertheless entertaining - humor. I thought they'd find it too much beneath their "standards". But that just shows how amazing Rob's acting was (or how few the options were in this category, hehe). I also wouldn't mind if Phil Seymour won.
Academy: Heath Ledger
Me: Robert Downey Jr.

Actress In A Leading Role

Anne Hathaway in "Rachel Getting Married"

Angelina Jolie in "Changeling"

Melissa Leo in "Frozen River"

Meryl Streep in "Doubt"

Kate Winslet in "The Reader"

I don't know what the Academy thought nominating Anne Hathaway. That is around as bad as if they nominated Jennifer Love Hewitt for I Know What You Did Last Summer or whatever. I sure hope they won't stoop so low as to give her an award too. Wait, no. That's not even an option. Kate Winslet admitted that she perfected her "not-winning" face since she had so many occasions to practice in the past but I think she's the deal this year. She already swiped in all the awards at the Golden Globes. I love her and I also wouldn't mind if Angelina Jolie or Meryl Streep got a little statue. Although I heard Changeling is bad, I doubt it is.
Academy: Kate Winslet
Me: Angelina Jolie

Actress In A Supporting Role

Amy Adams in "Doubt"

Penélope Cruz in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona"

Viola Davis in "Doubt"

Taraji P. I really hate Penélope Cruz and I really like Marisa Tomei so I'm going to go with the opposites.
Academy: Penélope Cruz
Me: Marisa Tomei

Directing

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"

David Fincher

"Frost/Nixon"

Ron Howard

"Milk"

Gus Van Sant

"The Reader"

Stephen Daldry

"Slumdog Millionaire"

Danny Boyle

Hmm. I heard The Curious Case... is very monumental visually and that Slumdog Millionaire is generally an amazing piece so I'd say one of them is likely to win. Sometimes I feel like I don't go out at all. But last week... Every Wednesday, I meet up with my friends in the evening because I have class until 8 but last week I decided not to go, saying I was tired. I ended up going out with my teacher and group mates for a few drinks which became all too many. So in the end I was able to take the first bus to Komló...

My sister's birthday was on Friday. We went to Trafik. I really like that place. But it's very expensive. Anyways my sister was paying so all good. =D After a few hours I joined my friends in Kino where a very interesting concert took place: a Scandinavian band was playing similar music to Joy Division. Later there was a DJ, who played a lot of Nine Inch Nails related music, aw. NIN is one of my most beloved bands. My dad gave us a lift to Komló in the middle of the night which he practically never does but... on Saturday...
(very fake picture of my sister and me)

On Saturday I had to get up at 7am. I went to bed at 5!!! I was travelling to Budapest to spend a day with my friends there and to see THE BEST YOUNG BAND OF PÉCS EVER playing in Budapest for the first time ever. They are called Szigorigor and they are very good friends of mine. They did an amazing show, I was flabbergasted. I've never seen them sound and play so well and their new songs just totally blew me off my feet. They are planning to record an album in January. I can't wait. After 2 hours of sleep I partied again until 5. I don't know what's gotten into me. =D I'm not such a party animal...
(the boys are rockin' hard)

I was practically useless on Sunday and today but at least I did some homework... Blah. Here's a beautiful picture of the place where I live. A real rarity.

Movietalk

My comment on Dóri's blog is a whole post itself, lol. Yeah, I liked Highlander...

Anyways, I watched five movies during the weekend again! Yay! And not for class but for pure entertainment.

Tropic Thunder - give it a chance. I mean it. It's so deliciously vulgar. Cheap hilarity at its best.

Evan Almighty - seriously I can't believe how Steve Carell could give his name to this crock of crap but at least he's hot. And funny, just not in this movie. But it's still a heartwarming family comedy and Morgan Freeman plays God again. Who could argue with that?

Max Payne - that is one hot movie! I loved it! I don't know why all the critics brought it down. Yeah, okay, the beginning is a bit flat but if you ever played the game I think you won't be disappointed. Except that the movie kind of abandons the game's storyline. Lol.

Reservoir Dogs - as I expected, it became my favourite Tarantino movie. I like the ambiance that Tarantino starts to build his movies from, I just don't like the results in the end but he balances his personal taste and common sense in this movie perfectly. But I heard that this movies has excellent music and remarkable swearing in it and I couldn't detect those at all. The cast is one of the most spectacular I've ever seen. I heart Tim Roth and Michael Madsen. ^_^

X-Men 2. - I just realised I haven't seen this movie and the 3rd part either. That is a lethal mistake for someone who grew up on comics. I'll make up for that soon. Also this year the Wolverine movie comes out, which tells the story of my favourite character's origins.

The conference on Saturday was a drag... don't want to talk about it. Before that I slept over at a friend's place on Friday and I baked her tomato-mozzarella croissants and choco-coco cake. That was nice. :)

End term is near. I'm developing a dandy gastric ulcer. =/

Worst week ever

OK, I wrote this two weeks ago but didn't have time to edit it so there you go:

Of course it was not the worst week ever, we always claim that this and that is the worst thing ever but we know they are not, we just like to moan about them for hours.

First off, I would like to take Chris's advice and thank some people for the Entry Of The Week Award. My parents for passing their skillfully writing genes down to me, Joe for having a sense of humour and of course my wonderful hairdresser whom I am never going to see again! Thanks!

Anyways, about my week. So we had those English exams and apart from losing a lot of sleep over them and spending nights learning for them, they kind of turned out as I expected, of course that does not mean they turned out good but as an English philosopher once said: "you can't always get what you want". The losing sleep part is actually not the tests' fault, my best friend had some personal problems and so I went to do best friend things with her and I got home late every day. But... here comes the black soup, as Hungarian people love to say.

I had an exam today in History of European Cinema and I failed.

WHAT?!

Yes.

I spent the weekend watching silent movies. Oh. My. God. They were disastrous. Half of them were boring but also horrible (horrible, as in you do not want to look) movies about the Russian revolution and the other half were simply never ending footage about people walking around on the streets of Berlin or whatever. While I was watching I remembered one of my favourite lines from the High Fidelity movie. I can only quote in Hungarian: "Ezért jó lemezboltban dolgozni, itt mindenféle trágya zenéket hallgathatsz kedvedre!". Well kids, that goes for movie school, too: "Ezért jó filmes suliba járni, itt mindenféle trágya filmeket nézhetsz kedvedre!". Hurray!

Apropos High Fidelity. I have finished the book in two days or so. I loved it of course. It was really interesting to compare the novel to the movie and it was easy for me since I know the latter by heart. I just realised that the movie is set in the US and the novel in England. The slang they are speaking and their taste in music and books are also changed around a bit in the movie to suit the American culture. Apart from that, Dick meets his girlfriend in another way and there are more scenes in the book that were simply left out, of course. The only thing I did not understand was why the two skater kids were included in the movie. Absolutely no mention of them in the book but they are fun so no problem. What the most outstanding thing was that the Rob of the book is actually an arse! For me, as a girl, it is obvious why he was a social fiasco! I know people like him and they are very frustrating. The movie-Rob is more of a mimosa type if you know what I mean and is kind of more heartbroken and less rude, I guess. But I think that is only because there are less opportunities for character building in a movie.

That's enough about last week.

So I didn't have time to finish this post because I was running off to a wine tasting last Monday. 'Tasting' is putting it very mildly. People who participated and earned 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in the game at the BTK-TTK Autumn Days won a free trip to Villány and I joined them. Let's just say that the wine was the best I have ever had and a jolly good feeling was all around the place. :D My friend is a senior and he formed a group with his freshmen and I was with them, they are very nice. :)

On Friday I went to see a favourite band of mine in Labor. That place is so cool but a bit too dark. Some nice lamps would do some good. Anyway Žagar was playing and it was so amazing, the perfect concert Žagar-wise. :)

Apart from that I'm starting to get worried about the end of the semester. :(:(:( *paranoid* But before that I still have to work at the 'A vászon és a dívány' conference on Saturday and I'm going on a road trip to see a friend's band two weeks later. Good times.

Here are two pictures, one from the wine tasting and one from the school's pitch. On another planet? I go to the hairdresser's every second YEAR. I don't have time to go there, I don't feel like it, I can't be bothered to go through the hassle all the time. But every once in a while, like now, when my hair gets to 2 meters, I have to go and ask for the impossible: layered with bangs. What is so hard to understand? I went to the hairdresser's today, a new guy in town. Everybody is like "Oh my God! Did you know that he could have been a world famous professional but he didn't want to leave Komló?", and I'm thinking, okay there is something seriously wrong with this dude to begin with, if he doesn't want to leave Komló but anyway let's give the rumors some credit and arrange for my hair to be cut.

I woke up in the morning, at 10. I washed my hair because it was in an ungodly state and I want to be nice at my first appointment with the new guy, right? I pull on my most alternative clothes, PURPLE chucks, leggings, a dress with psychedelic artwork on it, my grey sweater that has a crampon pattern with my mother's brooch and a Palestinian scarf, so that he can get the idea about my style, and I leave for the bus stop. Something bad is creeping on me mentally. I feel too good. I don't feel good about myself at all most of the time. The bus rolls into the stop and I look at my reflection in the window. I look fabulous. Like someone out of a fashion magazine with my huge waterfall of hair billowing behind me like some flag or whatever. I get on the bus. By the time I'm in downtown I'm hysterically clutching at my hair, it's long, it's thick, it's everything any other normal human being is dreaming about and I'm going to cut it. It almost feels like self-mutilation.

Anyway, I get there, describe my second thoughts about cutting my hair but expressing my intention to go through with it anyway because it did some good way back when I went to the hairdresser's 3, or was it 4, years ago. Then I say the magic words: LAYERED WITH BANGS. Needless to say in the end I didn't get ANY bangs. There's not even a part of my hair at the front that is shorter than any other part. Actually I laugh when I think about it now because it's so absurd it's ridiculous. Oh and I only got one layer. Wow. That's really layered. He also blow dried it in a way when your hair gets all bouncy and your head looks like it's 3 times bigger than it really is and you turn your neck 1.8 centimeters to the side and you can feel it bouncing. Bouncing. Around your head. So in the end I look like some chit off the road where the Desperate Housewives live. I was wearing purple shoes! And a bag made of green leatherette! A neat, bouncy housewife style is just what I was aiming for. Right.

But why is it that you can NEVER tell the hairdresser that something is wrong? Why can't you be all cool and composed and go "No way man. It looks like shit. Redo the thing. This is so not gonna happen. Got it?" No. Ha ha. No. You smile, you try to be really nice, and it's not because on the inside you are screaming and breaking things and stabbing knives into faceless forms. No, that comes later. It's because you are confused. You don't know what is happening at all because you never know when they are done and when the very last finishing touches take place, and you don't want to be rude and kind of hope that he's going to jump at you with a scissor and cut you the best bangs ever made while you're handing the money over. It doesn't happen. You pay the money, keep on smiling and you even THANK the person for dooming you to another 2 to 4 years of self loathing and ridicule. And you also lost a meter of hair and you didn't even get any bangs in exchange. You only realize what you just did and what has been done to you when you close the door behind you and it all rushes back to you and then come the things that happen on the inside. It is not fair, I tell you.

I leave. Thankfully it's a quiet neighbourhood so no one witnesses when at first I start laughing hysterically. I mean, hey! I look like a Desperate Housewife! How hilarious is that? Then I feel there's something wrong with my breathing, maybe it's just that I'm laughing the laugh of someone who just doesn't believe *it*. No. I'm hyperventilating and I still don't know if I should laugh or cry but I guess hyperventilating already decided for me. I caught a glimpse of myself in another window and now I almost feel sick. I'm wearing Janis Joplin's clothes but I went to Jackie Kennedy's hairdresser. Where could it have gone so horribly wrong?

I try to find a hidden place and a bench because in the beginning I imagined myself with my new alternative hair in a park in the midst of falling autumn leaves reading High Fidelity and listening to Thommy, my iPod. I make a few phone calls first, freaking out during the explanations of my absolutely fucked hair. Then I tie it in a ponytail. A ponytail. Have you seen me wearing any other hairstyle in class other than a ponytail? A ponytail is what I was trying to avoid from the beginning.

I switch on Thommy and put on some Cat Power but somehow even her voice is not as raw as it is on any other day. I mumble "Come on Cat, what's gotten into you today, too?" to myself and forcefully press down on the 'volume up' button and a moment later I note with satisfaction that my ears are close to bleeding. I take out the book but can't really concentrate on it, fortunately I've seen the movie so many times that I know the dialogues by heart and am vaguely aware of what is happening. The bench is entirely uncomfortable and the wind is starting to pick up. At one point it pushes a bunch of leaves into my face and clunks me on the head with a chestnut but I just can't take a hint, can I? I always have the urge to finish the chapter I'm in and I can't leave without doing so. I look at my cigarettes, all lined up in their box like soldiers, waiting to be sent out on a mission and their comrades under my feet who already did their job of putting another nail into my coffin and decide to go home.

I already know what will happen. My mother will not try to console me at all. She'll get mad at the guy because he got it all wrong and me because I was unable to explain what I wanted or tell him this isn't what I wanted at all, AGAIN. I can't wait for one of my friends to turn out to be a hairdresser. Because I'm starting to realize that's my only hope. Until then I have some 're-decorating' to do with a paper scissor and my mirror...

At least the weather was really nice.

Music makes my world go round

So it is 2 in the morning and I just finished putting together the playlist I would like to write about tonight. I know. I leave everything for the last minute but I had some hardships with this little flashplayer and finally it is how I want it.

Even though I study cinematography the title of my post is entirely true. A few weeks ago you would have found industrial metal and German punk on my iPod but right now the following songs make me tick, feel, breath - keep me alive to be honest.

Christmas is almost here and it is my favourite time of the year so the first song in my playlist is a Christmas track. It is Robert Downey covering a classic by Joni Mitchell. Can you imagine anything more blissful? With his soulful voice and the experience of all the hardships he had in his life, he makes this personal song by Mitchell his very own. You can practically taste the longing. He recorded this piece for an Ally McBeal Christmas album (A Very Ally Christmas), around the time his drug addiction reached its peak. Even if you do not know anything about his biography, he pretty much sums it up in this song. Heartbreaking and beautiful. Of course he also plays the piano. Backing vocals by Vonda Shepard.

The next song is by Elton John, from his real songwriter era. I simply want this song to be about my life. My connection to it is that simple. I want to try my luck in New York, experience every aspect of that city, be a part of it and be able to thank God for the people I find there. The tunes in this song are also timeless, the real genius of Elton shows here, something a lot of us forgot about a long time ago. I first heard it in a favourite movie of mine, 'Almost Famous'. I bought the soundtrack but unfortunately it does not include this song and way back then my English was not so good and the Internet was not this accessible and I stumbled upon it again just now - what a discovery. You may think this song is sad but really it is one of the most life-affirming pieces out there. :)

The next few songs are by a performer I can thank the Reading And Writing Skills lesson for. :) When we had to read a magazine from the American Corner I chose Rolling Stone and a Radiohead article, but on the next page there was this mysterious woman rolling around on a bed with a bulldog, smoking Marlboro Reds and I just had to find out about her. She is Chan (pronounced 'Shawn') Marshall, the woman behind 'Cat Power'. She is my greatest role model right now. I am not going to go into details about her biography because just like with the other two songs, her life is in her music. Just listen to her sometimes suicidal, sometimes easy going but always breathtakingly beautiful voice and riffs and you will get the idea. I included two early and two very new tracks.

I wrote a paragraph about Elliott Smith too, but it is entirely too personal, sorry. So please just listen to him and maybe you will be able to understand what I was going to say.

Music Playlist at MixPod.com

Google Books find

We had to find an interesting book in the Google Books search engine for today's class and I was relieved to see that they have Oscar Wilde's 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' in the archives. I have not actually started reading it yet but I love Oscar Wilde and reading the summary of the book I think it sounds so unusal and interesting and also very clever.

You all must feel profoundly cheated because of the summary I inserted here in the morning. Yes, I stole it off Wikipedia but I was in a hurry. So moving on to interesting tidbits and my expectations. This book is considered one of the last gothic horror books ever written. I think Oscar Wilde and gothic horror in one sentence should make everybody curious. The book also has a strong Faustian theme and deals with some subtle homosexuality which caused controversy back in the day and I think it still does to some point. For those of you who like to be blinded by the stunning lights of Hollywood, the character of Dorian Gray was also included in the blockbuster, 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' and if you liked him there you might like to find out more about his background.

The novel tells the story of young Dorian Gray, who's beauty captures the artist who is painting his portrait. While wandering in said artist's garden he meets a friend of the painter's. This friend introduces Dorian to modern views of hedonism. Dorian is affected so much by this revelation that he wishes for his portrait to age instead of him. His wish is granted and this power pushes him into several acts of debauchery, while his portrait shows all the effects these acts had on Dorian's soul, each sin manifestating as a disfigurement or sign of aging.

Dark and mysterious, isn't it?

You can read the book here.

Movietalk

I am getting more and more into RDJ movies since I last wrote so here are some recommendations. Turns out I cannot really not recommend RDJ movies nowadays. :D I must have a pretty bad case of starstruck.

So this week I watched 'Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang', which is a hilarious comedy thriller. I just loved it. Val Kilmer plays a gay detective who is helping Robert Downey's unfortunate thief character getting out of trouble and solving numerous connected murders in the end. It is complete with punchlines like "Look, buddy. This isn't 'good cop, bad cop'. This is the fag and the New Yorker!" and cut off fingers, guns, girls etc. And all is well if it ends well. :) Quality entertainment if you want a good laugh.

The highpoint of my last week was 'Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus'. It is highly fictional but based on the biography of breakthrough photographer of '50s New York, Diane Arbus. The movie was also made by one of my most beloved directors, Steven Shainberg who worked on a favourite piece of mine: 'Secretary'. They were trying to capture an 'Alice in Wonderland' kind of atmosphere and they did an amazing job with that. I was glued to the screen from the beginning. Sadly it is a genuine independent movie, meaning it had absolutely no marketing at all and so when RDJ asked the audience at The Jonathan Ross Show in London (!) if they ever heard of the movie, absolutely noone put their hands up. I found it very sad when in reaction to that he said: "Thank God I did 'Iron Man'..." I enjoy blockbusters like 'Iron Man' but honestly there is no use in even comparing these two movies because Fur has so much more to say and is an amazing piece of visual art. By the way Arbus is played by Nicole Kidman, my favourite actress, she gives her best but that is no surprise. For 90% of the movie, Downey's acting is reduced to his eyes, voice and gestures by the mask he is wearing but he is still so captivating and such a powerful presence that one does not even realize he is not able to use his face. You know you love trailers. ;)

I also went to a houseparty on Friday with my ex-classmates. When the party started to get boring we decided to put in a movie called 'A Scanner Darkly'. It is based on a Philip K. Dick novel and it counts as a huge cult movie in my circle of friends. I did not have the fortune to see it before so I was very happy, especially knowing RDJ plays in it. :D I know what you all think but it WAS a coincidence. The movie is coated in a very innovative comic effect so everything looks like it was drawn but before they did that all the scenes were recorded in the traditional way. We watched it twice (!) because right when we finished it the first time some people arrived in the middle of the night who wanted to see it also and I had no problem with that. :D But I guess you either love or hate this movie and I do not guarantee it is the former. The rest of the cast include Keanu Reeves, Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder.

Here is one of my favourite scenes, it captures the atmosphere just right. :P

Last but not least I present you the trailer of an upcoming movie I am very excited about. It is a drama based on a true story, I think it will leave a huge impact on everyone who sees it and the trailer suggests the most oustanding performances of the year. I hope Robert will at least get nominated for an Oscar, he really deserves it now. Once he was nominated for his work in Chaplin but the Academy is not too keen on giving out Oscars to twentysomethings. Their loss.

If you have the time, I recommend you to check out the trailer in high quality on the movie's official site: The Soloist.

Frostyfrolic

We had a task today to find synonyms and we came up with an alternative name for Coldplay: Frostyfrolic. :D So I decided to make a post about the Coldplay concert in Budapest, that took place in Papp László Budapest Sportaréna on the 23rd of September.

We took the 2pm train to Budapest because I wanted a good place and I got my wish: I stood in the second row. I got there around 5pm, the gates opened at 6:30, the first concert (Albert Hammond Jr - guitarist of The Strokes) started at 8pm, Coldplay took the stage at 9pm and the concert ended at 11pm.

The stage show was as superb as the band. Chris said some nice words and they had amazing surprises throughout the night. For example the butterfly rain during 'Lovers In Japan' or that time they performed 'The Scientist' in the middle of the rows of seats at the very back of the arena. My favourite song is 'Fix You' so that was the most special track for me at the concert.

As some of you may have heard today, a really good friend of mine, my former english teacher gave me a lift on the way back home but sadly we had some problems with finding our way so I finally got home at 3am. :D But I found the journey very pleasant. :D Ed was a bit freaked about getting lost. :)

All in all, it was an amazing experience and now here are some pictures I took with my mobile:
Albert Hammond Jr., Chris greeting us, two kind of visuals, the butterfly storm, one of the various backgrounds, Chris throwing his towel into the audience, my ticket and the butterflies I collected.

<a onblur="try type='text'>First post, LOTS of movie-talk

Took me a long time to finally start my blog. I am watching 'Pushing Daisies' at the moment, an amazing surrealistic new TV series on Viasat 3 and also trying to predict what tomorrow's RWS test will include. No clue. I was also unable to get ahold of a copy of High Fidelity but I had such a horrible week last week: turns out I am not going to get away with my tonsils intact in the end. I took two doses of antibiotics but I am still ill, very much so. So surgery for me in the near future. :(

On to lighter topics: my sister and me did not miss this year's Moziünnep like we had in the past. We watched 5 movies in 3 days in Pécs Plaza, Cinema City.
Dark Knight - the new Batman movie, which is totally overrated but if you are a Gary Oldman fan (I am) then it is a real gem.
Deception - an interesting and exciting erotic thriller with Ewan McGregor. The plot is very good but sadly they messed up the ending.
Journey to the Center of the Earth - let me say just one thing: it is not as bad as they say it is. :D
Hellboy II - we have already seen this at home but my sister really wanted to watch it in a real movie theatre because it has amazing visuals. We both love comic adaptations and this is one of our favourites so we enjoyed it.
My Best Friend's Girl - now this is a movie worth watching in my opinion but I do not think it is for everybody. :D One of the main characters is played by Dane Cook, an American stand up comedy performer and I am a huge fan of him. His unique style can be undoubtedly felt throughout the movie, which includes a lot of rude expressions and sexual remarks beside a great deal of humour. I loved it. :)

I also watched 'Ironman' at home and developed a huge crush on Robert Downey Jr. I always respected and loved him for his work but I found out a lot of new things about him last week. For example he has an album out. In my opinion it is quite horrible, like a Phil Collins musical mixed with a mediocre lounge album. He also uses a lot of high notes in his songs even though his voice is at its best when he sings the deepest notes. Let me illustrate his real singing talent with this little snippet of the legendary TV series, Ally McBeal (a series I sadly hated with passion, thus missing this scene when it aired):

I took a little walk down Memory Lane and dug out some old videocassettes and found one of my favourite movies, 'Wonderboys' also including Robert as an eccentric gay publisher. I recommend it to everyone, absolutely funny but with quite a lot of meaning and a spectacular cast: Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Frances McDormand and of course RDJ.

The last "cinematic adventure", as Dane Cook likes to call watching a movie, I had was Zodiac, a thriller "surprisingly" starring Robert. :) It tells the story of a famous serial killer of the '70s in San Francisco and Mr Downey plays a journalist who is investigating the case but loses his job after he gets threathened by the killer and turns to various drugs and alcohol to ease his paranoia. The main character of the movie is Jake Gyllenhaal by the way. It is two and a half hours long, too long in my opinion: due to the absolute incompetence of the police, the movie has long periods where everything happens very slowly but at least we can say it is quite realistic, since it reflects the helplessness of the characters concerned.

I hope you find my little review issue helpful in choosing your next cinematic adventure. :)

P.s.: MCkey left me a comment about how he thinks Joe resembles Robert Downey Jr. so I decided to just stick a little picture here where he sports that authentic Joe-look. :D
